In April 2021, GBIF began exporting monthly data snapshots to the Microsoft Planetary Computer (Azure), as an Amazon AWS Open Dataset and as a Google Public Dataset. These exports contain similar data columns as a “Simple” format download, but use the Parquet format which is better suited for use with cloud or big data tools.
Since then, the Parquet format has gained support for geographic data types and tooling has improved to support partitioning, better compression and indexing features.
